Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs) have existed for 30 years in spirit and continuous improvement. Some original reasons for an ELN are still valid today, such as capturing the scientific method, efficiency gains for working in an electronic environment, and IP protection and capture with ELN IP protection cases hitting the courts.

Regrettably, many organizations treat ELN as a mere ‘project’ rather than a ‘journey,’ leading to suboptimal outcomes.

There are better practices for selecting, implementing, and maintaining an ELN footprint in an R&D organization, and it isn’t as easy as you think. In fact, this is true with many scientific solutions and applications.
